Closed Crawl Spaces – The Way it Ought to Be

closed-crawl-space

Crawl spaces have many advantages over houses built on a slab – they are easier to service, less prone to termite damage, and create a physical separation from the ground below. However, there are also significant disadvantages to consider, namely moisture problems. Often times water will enter the crawl space due to flooding, percolation from adjacent soil, or insufficient storm water management. This will lead to moisture, mold, and poor air quality entering the living space via duct work and cracks.

Many homes built on crawl space foundations in the Southeastern United States suffer from poor moisture management, some of the common symptoms include:

  • Mold or moisture in the crawl space or living area
  • Musty odors in the living area
  • Condensation (“sweating”) on air conditioning ductwork or equipment
  • Buckled hardwood floors
  • High humidity in the living area
